Born in New York in 1774, Elizabeth married William Seton and raised a family. After his death, her search for truth led her into the Catholic Church.

She founded the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph and helped establish the American parochial-school tradition, becoming the first native-born citizen of the United States to be canonized.
