Devotion
In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Let us pray the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows and Seven Joys of Saint Joseph. In each meditation, we ask Saint Joseph to lead us more deeply to Jesus and Mary.
The First Sorrow and Joy of Saint Joseph: His doubt, and the message of the Angel.
Most chaste spouse of Mary, your heart was burdened with sorrow when you considered quietly withdrawing from Mary. But your sorrow was changed into joy when the Angel revealed that the Child had been conceived by the Holy Spirit. By this sorrow and joy, obtain for us the grace to trust God's providence in every uncertainty, and to welcome Jesus faithfully into our lives.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Second Sorrow and Joy of Saint Joseph: The poverty of Jesus' birth, and the Nativity of the Savior.
Most blessed patriarch, you grieved to see the Son of God born in poverty, with no room prepared for Him. Yet your sorrow was transformed into heavenly joy when you beheld the newborn Savior, adored by angels and shepherds. By this sorrow and joy, obtain for us a humble heart, detached from worldly comfort, and filled with wonder at the love of the Word made flesh.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Third Sorrow and Joy of Saint Joseph: The Circumcision, and the Holy Name of Jesus.
Obedient guardian of the Redeemer, your heart suffered when the Child first shed His blood. Yet you rejoiced when, in obedience to God, you gave Him the saving name of Jesus. By this sorrow and joy, obtain for us purity of heart, obedience to God's commandments, and a deep reverence for the Holy Name of Jesus, before which every knee shall bend.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Fourth Sorrow and Joy of Saint Joseph: The prophecy of Simeon, and the promise of redemption.
Faithful saint, you were deeply grieved when Simeon foretold the sufferings of Jesus and Mary. Yet you rejoiced to hear that this Child would bring light and salvation to many nations. By this sorrow and joy, obtain for us courage beneath the Cross, steadfast faith in Christ's saving work, and the grace to live and die in the friendship of Jesus and Mary.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Fifth Sorrow and Joy of Saint Joseph: The flight into Egypt, and the overthrow of idols.
Watchful guardian of the Holy Family, you suffered exile, danger, and hardship while protecting Jesus from Herod. Yet you rejoiced that the Savior was safe in your care and that the idols of Egypt fell before Him. By this sorrow and joy, obtain for us freedom from sin, protection for refugees and persecuted families, and strength to keep Christ at the center of our homes.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Sixth Sorrow and Joy of Saint Joseph: The return from Egypt, and the hidden life at Nazareth.
Glorious protector, you feared returning when you learned that danger still threatened the Child. Yet, guided by God, you rejoiced to dwell peacefully with Jesus and Mary in Nazareth. By this sorrow and joy, obtain for us attentiveness to God's guidance, holiness in daily work, peace within our families, and the grace to live always in the loving presence of Jesus and Mary.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Seventh Sorrow and Joy of Saint Joseph: The loss of the Child Jesus, and finding Him in the Temple.
Tender father, for three sorrowful days you and Mary searched for Jesus. Your grief became abundant joy when you found Him in the Temple among the teachers. By this sorrow and joy, obtain for us the grace never to lose Jesus through serious sin, to seek Him without ceasing, and to find Him in His Church, His Word, and the Holy Eucharist.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Let us pray.
O God, who in Your ineffable providence chose blessed Joseph to be the spouse of Your most holy Mother, grant, we pray, that he whom we venerate as our protector on earth may be our intercessor in heaven. Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
